Nail Fungal Infection
Fungal infection of the toenails (also called onychomycosis) occurs when a fungus infects the tissue underneath the toenail. The result is discoloration of the nail. Often the nail becomes thickened and raised. It commonly involves several nails simultaneously.
It often occurs after an injury to the toe, in people with excessive perspiration and can be related to footwear. It also commonly occurs in people with Diabetes and vascular disorders.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of fungal infection of a toenail can be made based on the appearance of the toe. In some cases a sample of nail may be sent to pathology to identification.
Treatment
Many topical preparations can be used depending on the nail appearance. If the nail is very thick it can be painlessly thinned down which can make the treatment more effective.More recent research has shown that unresponsive nail fungal infections may be more effectively treated by applying a preparation that changes the pH of the nail.
Without Treatment
The nails can become very thickened, discolored and unsightly. In some cases, pain or infection can result from very thickened nails.
